Secret Spring - Hwy 167 Overton Nevada

Finding water in the desert.

Hi Mom,
When we were out and about around Lake Mead, we found this spring.
While springs aren't really all that uncommon in the desert, to see one this "bubbly" isn't all that common.
We were glad we stopped to check it out.

Getting Over The Hump - Hwy C470 - Morrison CO

Guess what day it is.....
It seems to me Mom..........
........that all I have done lately is plan for something else.
The couple of months have been all about preparing for some holiday, that we don't get to enjoy because we immediately start talking about what we are going to do for the next holiday.
I am going to spend today as today.  No future planning for me today.
What are your hump day plans?

Guardians - Mouses Tank Rd - Overton NV

What you thought you saw isn't always what you saw.
Hi Mom
I am still playing around with my Valley of Fire pictures.  This picture is odd.
While hiking in Petroglyph Canyon we remember seeing, on a side valley, these huge sandstone faces looking at us threateningly.
So I took a picture of it.  Not only does nothing really look frightening, but it really doesn't look like faces overmuch either.
Reminded us of a road trip through Oregon where there were immense trees at three am but not at five pm the next day.

Frilly - Hwy 549 - NW Arkansas

This almost looks like red lettuce...

Christmas shopping done! Mom
Christmas cards sent!  (you shouldn't get any complaints this year from those who didn't get their card until the New Year)
For a short blink, the weatherpersons talked about snow on Christmas. I was so excited. Now they aren't taking about snow anymore.
sigh

Lizard in Monochrome - Orlando Florida

O Okay! Okay! This is the last lizard*.
*at least for a little while.

Fish has very good eyes Mom -
He can find a lizard anywhere.  This guy really blends well with his environment.  I completely walked by the tree and had to double back when Fish got excited.
I don't think has never grown out of finding reptiles. It is really fun, I hope he never does.

Bananas for the Lizard - Hawaii

L Loving Lizards, Day two.
Another one of Fish's lizard finds Mom,
This time, the lizard was scurrying out of a bunch of baby bananas.
I am still amazed at all the different colors bananas grow in.

xoxo a.d.

Leaping Lizards - Somewhere - Orlando Florida

L Lizard portrait, the symbols of love.

Sifting through files today Mom -
and I realized that I have an enormous collection of lizard portraits.
I am not overly fond of reptiles.  Fish always points them out,
and since I like Fish, I take pictures of the lizards he sees.
Ah to be in love.

Pasqueflower - Hwy 549 - NW Arkansas

D Delicate, almost transparent petals.
Hi Mom -
We had a crazy cold snap here, it got to below 20 and I realized that I am no longer acclimated to cold weather.

I stayed in the studio and played with flowers and macro filters some more.

Did you know that Pasqueflowers were fuzzy?  I didn't really either, until I got up close.

xoxo a.d.

D is for Deer - HWY 549 - NWAR

T Taking over the neighborhood.
I hadn't realized it before Mom but,

there are deer everywhere here.  I knew there were some, as they love to hop out into the middle of the road without checking left - right - left.

When the leaves fell, I realized there are more deer living in my neighborhood than people.

I think I am going to get a deer feeder, they have to be hungry and I don't want them eating my flowers.

Rose In White - HWY549 - NWAR

B Beauty only seen in black and white.

Another day playing in the studio Mom -
Today I am playing with roses - but all flowers, in macro, become so complex. Look at the ever so slight variations of color.
Emerson said "The Earth laughs in flowers".  I agree, and I also think the earth should have flowers everywhere.

xoxo a.d.

Camellia - HWY549 - NWAR

F Focusing on texture.
It is WINDY today Mom!

So, I am trapped inside, in the studio, playing with flowers.

The flower itself was such a brilliant white that I had to tint it slight to get any texture visible at all.  I do like how this one turned out.

What do you think?

xoxo a.d.

Christmas Tree Flower Mamalahoa Rd Papaikou HI

F Festive Flower.
Friday's Flower Mom!

This is one of the flowers we saw in Hawaii at the Botanical Gardens.

It has the Christmas tree shape, and with the small blooms looks like it is festive.

I am trying to decide if I should try and make a print of this or if I should try and draw something with a similar feel....maybe both, to add to the Christmas decor this year.

xoxo a.d.

Spikey Cones - HWY 549 - NWAR

G Getting with the evergreens.

Time to start the Christmas decorating Mom-

Christmas is a holiday that I have a hard time getting into since we moved to the South.

Growing up Christmas mean snow, and here, there isn't any.

I am undaunted!  I will get Christmasfied, without the snow.

Check for updates.

The Conservatory - Las Vegas Blvd - Las Vegas NV

A A themed garden on the strip

While we were walking through the Bellagio Mom we found the conservatory.
Within it was this very cool themed (with moving figures) garden.  I totally loved it.
and it was FREE too!  How many things are free in Vegas.
I bet the Christmas garden plans are extraordinary.
xoxo a.d.

Samurai - Las Vegas Blvd - Las Vegas NV

S Samurai on the Strip
Samurai on the Strip Mom.....

We stopped by the Bellagio to check out their Samurai exhibit.  They had some interesting pieces and it was quite nicely laid out.
I am convinced that the Samurai are superhuman after looking at this armor.  I would be a puddle of sweat and goo, and I am not quite sure how there were able to lift their arms to swing a sword.
xoxo a.d.

Stick-bug - Main Street - Eureka Springs AR

T The twigs move by themselves
This is a stick-bug Mom, and a rather big one too.
They are harmless, but can me quite unnerving when you are sitting down, enjoying the 68 degree weather and the twigs start moving around you.
Have I mentioned how much I love the winters in the South?
xoxo a.d.

Little Golden Gate Bridge - HWY 187 - Eureka Springs AR

B Barely a single lane.
This is the "Little Golden Gate Bridge of Arkansas" Mom,
It is official name is Beaver Bridge, but you can see how it got the nickname.
It is unnerving to cross.  It is a single lane bridge, barely.
I don't want to try and ever cross this at night.
xoxo a.d.

Towing Capacity - I70 - Eastern Colorado Plains

T The little Prius that could?

Did you know your Prius can tow Mom?
I am actually really shocked.  I had no idea that a Prius had that kind of gumption.
My hat is off for these totally fuel efficient travelers.
Bonus points for their groovy bike.
xoxo a.d.

Sunset Roses - Crossover Rd - Fayetteville AR

F Flowers For Friday!

Pike's View - Pike's Peak Toll Rd - Colorado Springs CO

H Happy Thanksgiving - What are you grateful for?

I had this vision of what type of card my Thanksgiving card would be Mom.
I then realized I don't have a single picture of a turkey anywhere (a situation that must  be remedied).
Instead I picked the view that inspired the America the Beautiful song and at the end of the day, it is views like this that I am grateful for.
I am thankful that I get to drive around the country and see views like this.
I <3 road trips.

xoxo a.d.

The Pairs - Petroglyph Canyon - Valley of Fire - Overton NV

W Within the canyons of the Valley of Fire.

These were my main reason for visiting the Valley of Fire Mom.
I wanted to see the petroglyphs.
I had read in Guns, Germs and Steel about the lack of a written language in native US cultures...but couldn't these and other imagery (e.g. hide painting) be indicative of a written language?
I need to write to Jared Diamond and find out.
xoxo a.d.

My Thoughts on Guns, Germs and Steel

Rabbit In the Rock - Mouse's Tank Rd - Overton NV

R Red rocks weather so beautifully.

I found a rabbit in the Valley of Fire Mom.
It has been a fair bit since I have hiked in the desert.  I have missed it.
I specifically miss crawling around, looking at the shapes the rocks turn into, it is almost like looking for cloud pictures.
I guess this means I need to take more trips to the desert.  Bummer.
xoxo a.d.

Lake Mead - HWY 167 - Overton NV

T The big lake in the desert.

We ended up taking the scenic route to the Valley of Fire Mom -
We decided to drive through the Lake Mead recreation area, checking out the big lake in the desert.
I managed to get there early enough for the blue period, but sadly  (sigh) I missed the sunrise.
xoxo a.d.

Paris At Dusk - Las Vegas Blvd - Las Vegas NV

L Look at the balloon Mom!
I had so much fun photographing the Strip Mom -
I was surprised that I had as much fun in Las Vegas, as I am not particularly fond of crowds.
Crowds or not, Vegas, in all of it's splendor, is incredibly fun to take pictures of.
I love the Paris balloon.
xoxo a.d.

Scowling Sunset - I15 - Nevada

E Eyes in the sky!

Ignore the dumpster Mom -
Focus on the sky - isn't it amazing?
I *think* this is being caused by the shadow of the mountain, but it does look like the sky is scowling at the dumpster.
Why is the dumpster in the picture you ask?
Because that was the only place I could pull off.
xoxo a.d.

Hoover Dam - Kingman Wash Access Rd - Temple Bar Marina AZ

M Minding my mother.

Here I am at Hoover Dam Mom -
You said I couldn't miss it, so I came,  and damn it, it was really crowded at the damn.
Damn engineering marvel too.
Here is a dam picture.
I suppose that is enough dam's
xoxo a.d.

Naked Strip - Las Vegas Blvd - Las Vegas NV

L Look Mom! No cars!

Some months ago I had made plans to run the Las Vegas Rock and Roll half marathon  just to get this picture Mom.
Due to some unforeseen training issues (other wise known as not training enough) I had to pass on running it.  We had thought to cancel the trip, but after #VegasStrong we made sure we came.
I was able to get the picture I wanted and I saw the race from the sidelines.
Next year!

xoxo a.d.

Our Guest - Hwy 549 - NWAR

I It looked much bigger in real life.

Look who stopped by Mom -
I was outside, raking leaves, minding my own business and then
suddenly
HOP!
Scared me to death, I thought I was going to have a heart attack.
xoxo a.d.

Bullies - York St - Denver CO

W Who knew this about fish?

Who knew that fish were such bullies Mom -
It seems like every fish pond we visit (and we seems to stop by every single one) there is always these big fish trying to eat the little fish.
I get the life metaphor here I still think it sucks though.
xoxo a.d.

Bee Red - Crossover St - Fayetteville AR

R Red on Fridays

This little red flower is this Friday's flower Mom -
I was surprised at the time that this delicate looking flower could support the weight of the bee.
Plus it is red, and Friday is R.E.D.
Do you have your red on?

xoxo a.d.

Southern Belle - Forest Ave - Orlando Fl

F Frilly and fluffy, petticoats and all.
In the studio again Mom -
It's really cold and rainy, can you tell?
I am not sure what type of flower this is but it reminds me of the old timey southern belles - with the frilly on top/tiny waist/hoop skirt look.
I like how the texture of the flower appears when it is black and white.
xoxo a.d.

The Mangrove - Forest Ave - Orlando FL

B Beauty in the alien.
So Mom -
I was playing around in the studio and I converted the roots of this Mangrove tree to black and white, completely isolating it.
I love how it came out, twisted, alien, almost sensual.
Art print?
xoxo a.d.

The Fisherman Hwy 19 Hilo HI

O Ocean fishing in the early morning.

I love watching fishermen Mom -
*sigh* I suppose I should say fisherpersons.
It is such an engrossing mediation for those that love to fish.  It becomes like a dance to them, and anyone doing what they love to do is beautiful.
There are of course exceptions to the above statement - (criminals, pyshopaths, terrorists) - but as a general rule, doing what you love makes you look beautiful.
xoxo a.d.

Ozark Autumn Co Rd 5 Kingston AR

H Happy Autumn 2017
I think that I have my 2017 "Autumn" picture Mom.
I took this photo on one of the few unpopulated overlooks along the Whitaker Point trail.
You have to admit, the Ozarks sure do know the way to put on an Autumn show.
xoxo a.d.

Pink Bananas - Akaka Falls Rd - Honomu HI

W Who knew you could get them in pink?

I know, I know, bananas aren't flowers Mom but.....
......these are some seriously pretty bananas.  I had heard once that bananas come in pink, but this was my first actual sighting.
We found this bunch on the trail to Akaka Falls.
xoxo a.d.

Autumn Red - Co Rd 5 - Kingston AR

A Almost, but not quite.
Had this been a calm day Mom......
I found the perfect tree in the perfect light while on our Whitaker Point hike.
Alas, it was very windy and I don't feel like I captured the motion blur very well, and it was too windy for me to avoid capturing any blur.
......here is to another one that got away.
xoxo a.d.

Poetry - Co Rd 5 - Kingston AR

* *Sigh* Young love.
I saw these two while we were hiking around Whitaker Point Mom.
The romantic in me likes to think she was reading him her poetry while he sat, enthralled. They picked such a pretty spot for it too.
Who knows what they were actually doing?    Except trying desperately to ignore the photographer interrupting their interlude.
xoxo a.d.

Haunted Staircase - Wonderview Ave - Estes Park CO

S Stephen King said so.

Happy Halloween Mom!
A few October's back we went on a tour of the Stanley Hotel.
Do you see any ghosts?  Yeah, I didn't either.
I think it is the Wednesday thing, I always seem to schedule stuff like this on a Wednesday and that seems to be the universal "day off". The hotel is gorgeous and we had a lot of fun touring the grounds, cellar, and corridors looking for the no show ghosts.
xoxo a.d.

Whitaker Point - County Rd 5 - Kingston AR

W What an amazing view!
Remember that one place in Tuck Everlasting?  The one that is so peaceful and pretty?
We hiked there this weekend.  It is lovely, all dressed up for fall.
Whitaker point in also a popular hike, so in real life, the crag looks like this.
We still had a lot of fun (and company!)
The views are spectacular.
xoxo a.d.

Monster Old Mamalahoa Rd Papaikou HI

R Rawr! Snarl!
Orchids are so cool Mom -
This one looks like a monster, so I picked it as the perfect flower for the for the Friday before Halloween.
I love the whiskers.
xoxo a.d.

Is That A Ghost? HWY 549 NWAR

E Eerie and unexpected.
This was a little creepy Mom -
I was wandering through the forest, getting pictures of leaves, moss, and squirrels etc and when I started processing this image I noticed the shadow.
I *think* (hope) it is simply motion blur from the wind, otherwise, Whispy and I were nose to nose.
I suppose it is almost Halloween.
xoxo a.d.

Pig In The Wall - Main St - Eureka Springs AR

I I am in Razorback territory.
There is a pig in the wall Mom - do you see it?
I had been sitting next to the wall for about 20 minutes before I noticed it.
I wonder if it was part of the original design or if it was carved later.
There should be art and figures within all walls, just to keep everyone's souls happy.
xoxo a.d.

Palms on Baronne St - New Orleans LA

A A light in the window.
I love the architecture of New Orleans Mom.
This shot is on Baronne Street.  I liked the contrast between the palms and the building.  After playing around in color, I decided that it ultimately looks better in black and white.
I think it makes the lamp in the window stand out.
What do you think?
xoxo a.d.

Pachyderm - AR 187 - Eureka Springs AR

E Elephants in the Ozarks
Here is something unexpected Mom -
We were about to drive over Beaver dam, when we looked to the right, and saw a giant elephant down in the gully.
It is probably the last place I would have expected to see an elephant.
We found out later that once upon a time there was a "Dinosaur World" there, but it is no longer open.
I guess you would call this a Jurassic Park ghost town?
xoxo a.d.

Saxifraga - Guanella Pass Rd - Georgetown CO

A A delicate looking alpine flower.
This is a Saxifraga Mom.
We found this one on the Silver Dollar Lake trail - after driving through Georgetown and Guanella Pass (we needed praline caramel corn for the hike)
The lakes at the end of the trail are lovely  - although most people don't continue the full trail to Murray lake,  turning back at the Silver Dollar Lake instead.
It is worth the extra hike to see Murray lake.
xoxo a.d.

An Aquarius - Main St - Eureka Springs AR

I Is it still the Aquarius age?
Mom -
Ever since our first date, when we went to the bar "Age of Aquarius"  (now torn down and transformed into a parking lot) we have had to stop by any establishment with the name Aquarius.
The Aquarius we found this time was a taqueria named the Aquarius Taqueria in Eureka Springs Arkansas.
I loved the food, the ambiance on the patio (with it's own spring) made the visit.
I did mention the food right?
xoxo a.d.

Good Sport - Weston St - Pea Ridge AR

W We truly don't give enough credit to these guys.
We don't give near enough credit to our police officers Mom -
I mean look at this guys, being such a good sport, smiling and everything.  All because he had the poor timing of standing next to a half empty (not his!) box of doughnuts when a photographer happened to walk by.
We don't pay these guys nearly enough to get both shot at and forced to smile in a stereotypical picture.
xoxo a.d.

Lone Mule - Weston St - Pea Ridge AR

I Is an empty saddle okay?
This is the ending of a boot race Mom.
To race, the participants must surrender their boots to be scattered at the end of the arena.  The contestants must race a mule to the end of the arena, dismount, find and put on THEIR boots (this rule was particularly emphasized), remount their mule and make it back across the finish line.
This is how most mules finished the race.
Did you know that mules are pretty grouchy animals?
xoxo a.d.

Pole Bending - Weston St - Pea Ridge AR

U Unheard of in my world.
OMG Mom!
I was much to sheltered growing up, I had no idea there was such a thing as this.
This is a pole bending competition at the Pea Ridge Mule Jump - in the South, as a game, mules are made to run through an obstacle course.
I have finally found a way to use the word "irascible" in a sentence.  Mules are irascible. It is the perfect word to describe them.
I suspect this will turn out to be quite an entertaining event.
xoxo a.d.

The Last Rose - HWY 549 NWAR

P Putting the garden to bed.
This Friday's flower is a rose Mom -
I was trimming down my rosebushes, getting them ready for the cold.
I ended up completely off the gardening path and taking pictures of all of the roses.
Then the dog ate one.
xoxo a.d.
