A Note from the Road: Road Trip Colorado - Haunted Staircase - Wonderview Ave - Estes Park, Colorado

S Stephen King said so.

Happy Halloween Mom!
A few October's back we went on a tour of the Stanley Hotel.
Do you see any ghosts?  Yeah, I didn't either.
I think it is the Wednesday thing, I always seem to schedule stuff like this on a Wednesday and that seems to be the universal "day off". The hotel is gorgeous and we had a lot of fun touring the grounds, cellar, and corridors looking for the no-show ghosts.

A Note from the Road: Road Trip Arkansas - Whitaker Point - County Rd 5 - Kingston, Arkansas

What an amazing view!
Remember that one place in Tuck Everlasting?  The one that is so peaceful and pretty?
We hiked there this weekend.  It is lovely, all dressed up for fall.
Whitaker point is also a popular hike, so in real life, the crag looks like this.
We still had a lot of fun (and company!)
The views are spectacular.

A Note from the Road: Road Trip Hawaii - Monster - Old Mamalahoa Rd - Papaikou, Hawaii

Rawr! Snarl!
Orchids are so cool Mom -
This one looks like a monster, so I picked it as the perfect flower for the for the Friday before Halloween.
I love the whiskers.

A Note From the Road: Road Trip Arkansas - Is That A Ghost? - HWY 549 - Bella Vista, Arkansas

Eerie and unexpected.
This was a little creepy Mom -
I was wandering through the forest, getting pictures of leaves, moss, and squirrels etc and when I started processing this image I noticed the shadow.
I *think* (hope) it is simply motion blur from the wind, otherwise, Whispy and I were nose to nose.
I suppose it is almost Halloween.

A Note from the Road: Road Trip Arkansas - Pig In The Wall - Main St - Eureka Springs, Arkansas

I am in Razorback territory.
There is a pig in the wall Mom - do you see it?
I had been sitting next to the wall for about 20 minutes before I noticed it.
I wonder if it was part of the original design or if it was carved later.
There should be art and figures within all walls, just to keep everyone's souls happy.

A Note from the Road: Road Trip Louisiana - Palms on Baronne St - Baronne Street - New Orleans, Lousiana

A light in the window.
I love the architecture of New Orleans Mom.
This shot is on Baronne Street.  I liked the contrast between the palms and the building.  After playing around in color, I decided that it ultimately looks better in black and white.
I think it makes the lamp in the window stand out.
What do you think?

A Note from the Road: Road Trip Arkansas - Pachyderm - AR 187 - Eureka Springs, Arkansas

E Elephants in the Ozarks
Here is something unexpected Mom -
We were about to drive over Beaver dam when we looked to the right and saw a giant elephant down in the gully.
It is probably the last place I would have expected to see an elephant.
We found out later that once upon a time there was a "Dinosaur World" there, but it is no longer open.
I guess you would call this a Jurassic Park ghost town?

A Note from the Road: Road Trip Colorado - Saxifraga - Guanella Pass Rd - Georgetown, Colorado.

A delicate looking alpine flower.
This is a Saxifraga Mom.
We found this one on the Silver Dollar Lake trail - after driving through Georgetown and Guanella Pass (we needed praline caramel corn for the hike)
The lakes at the end of the trail are lovely  - although most people don't continue the full trail to Murray lake,  turning back at the Silver Dollar Lake instead.
It is worth the extra hike to see Murray lake.

A Note from the Road: Road Trip Arkansas - An Aquarius - Main St - Eureka Springs, Arkansas

Is it still the Aquarius age?
Mom -
Ever since our first date, when we went to the bar "Age of Aquarius"  (now torn down and transformed into a parking lot) we have had to stop by any establishment with the name Aquarius.
The Aquarius we found this time was a taqueria named the Aquarius Taqueria in Eureka Springs Arkansas.
I loved the food, the ambiance on the patio (with it's own spring) made the visit.
I did mention the food right?

A Note from the Road: Road Trip Arkansas - What a Good Sport - Weston St - Pea Ridge, Arkansas

We truly don't give enough credit to these guys.
We don't give near enough credit to our police officers Mom -
I mean look at this guys, being such a good sport, smiling and everything.  All because he had the poor timing of standing next to a half empty (not his!) box of doughnuts when a photographer happened to walk by.
We don't pay these guys nearly enough to get shot at and then be forced to smile in a stereotypical picture.

A Note from the Road: Road Trip Arkansas - Lone Mule - Weston St - Pea Ridge, Arkansas

Is an empty saddle okay?
This is the ending of a boot race Mom.
To race, the participants must surrender their boots to be scattered at the end of the arena.  The contestants must race a mule to the end of the arena, dismount, find and put on THEIR boots (this rule was particularly emphasized), remount their mule and make it back across the finish line.
This is how most mules finished the race.
Did you know that mules are pretty grouchy animals?

A Note from the Road: Road Trip Arkansas - Pole Bending - Weston St - Pea Ridge, Arkansas

Unheard of in my world.
OMG Mom!
I was much too sheltered growing up, I had no idea there was such a thing as this.
This is a pole bending competition at the Pea Ridge Mule Jump - in the South, as a game, mules are made to run through an obstacle course.
I have finally found a way to use the word "irascible" in a sentence.  Mules are irascible. It is the perfect word to describe them.
I suspect this will turn out to be quite an entertaining event.

A Note from the Road: Road Trip Arkansas - The Last Rose - HWY 549 - Bella Vista, Arkansas

Putting the garden to bed.
This Friday's flower is a rose Mom -
I was trimming down my rosebushes, getting them ready for the cold.
I ended up completely off the gardening path and taking pictures of all of the roses.
Then the dog ate one.

A Note from the Road: Road Trip Arkansas - Kangaroo - Safari Rd - Gentry, Arkansas

Fluffy and flexible
I caught the kangaroo in mid-jump Mom.
I had no idea that kangaroos were so "bendy" and could put some yogi's to shame with their flexibility.
Oh and they are super soft, and seem to almost want to be petted but I am smarter than that - I have seen the Animal Planet stuff in Australia,  kangaroos are quite adept boxers.

A Note from the Road: Road Trip Missouri - Prairie Dog - HWY 86 - Eagle Rock, Missouri

C Cute, tubby, little vermin.
A cute little Prairie Dog Mom!
It is different to see one in a zoo, they used to run wild around our neighborhood in Colorado.
They were the bane of anyone working for the parks department or utility company.
They can carry plague too.
Still, they are very cute.

A Note from the Road: Road Trip Florida - Seals - Sea World Dr - Orlando, Florida

B Beautiful motherhood.

Continuing with the cute animal trend Mom.
We saw these seals at Sea World.  It looks like a mom seal cuddling her baby.
The beauty of motherhood.
(maybe, I guess it could be something else)

A Note from the Road: Road Trip Arkansas - Two Tutu's - HWY 10 - Perryville, Arkansas

S Slowing coming out of my sheltered existence.
We found the most amazing festival ever Mom!
Seriously!
It is a goat festival.
Consisting of goats is costume, goats in lingerie, people dressed as goats, and a goatee contest.
Perryville Arkansas seriously knows how to come up with a party theme.

A Note from the Road: Road Trip Arkansas - Sunflower - HWY 549 - Bella Vista, Arkansas

The detail of the inner sunflower.
A sunflower for Friday Mom -
I was playing with flowers in the studio and I liked how the sunflower turned out.  Can you see the pollen?
Happy Friday!
xoxo a.d.

A Note from the Road: Road Trip Arkansas - Lake Mist - HWY 549 - Bella Vista, Arkansas

Sunrise lightly coloring the mist.

Misty morning Mom -  I love watching the fog rise from the lake.
It was a very quiet morning - not even the fishermen were out.
Hot chocolate weather.
Grab a sweater.
xoxo a.d.

A Note from the Road: Road Trip Colorado - Aspen and Pine - HWY 40 - Berthoud Pass, Colorado

I love the contrasting colors.
More Aspens Mom,
The leaves are just barely starting to change in Arkansas and I hear that his pass, Berthoud, as already snow in Colorado.
I have still quite a bit of fall ahead of me.
xoxo a.d.

A Note from the Road: Road Trip Arkansas - Fall Rain - HWY 549 - Bella Vista, Arkansas

Hanging about inside.
Rainy day today Mom,
That is okay though - it is a great time to open the doors and let the petrichor refresh the house.
Today is going to be a studio day.
xoxo a.d.

A Note From the Road: Road Trip Colorado - Aspens - Guanella Pass - Georgetown, Colorado

An Autumn ago.
I do miss the Aspens Mom,
We had made it a habit to take Guanella Pass every Fall to see the Aspens change, of course, we also stopped by the Georgetown Candy Company for their praline caramel corn.
I miss the praline caramel corn too. Road trip to Colorado is in order!
